Workshops for 2017
The Manito Art League offers monthly workshops from May through October. They are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. (Free to Members and $10 for non-members.)
Workshops are held the first Wednesday of the month, following the meeting, at the Manitowish Waters Community Center on Hwy 51.
May 10, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. “Birchbark Star Ornaments” with Elise Thornton
The workshop will begin with information how to legally harvest birchbark in the northwoods. Participants will then learn how to fold 2 different stars and 3-D beads. The following materials will be supplied: birch bark cut into strips, waxed linen, beads, and tools. There is no fee for MAL members; non-members will be charged a $10 fee. There will be a material fee of $6.00 per two-star kit for all participants. Please bring a lunch. The deadline for signing up is April 30.

June 7, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. “Mixed Media on Canvas” with Char Brickner
“GET READY TO FIND YOUR INNER CREATIVITY!”
Apply layers of color with paint, inks, crayons, chalks and pencils. Add texture with stencils, paste, inks, stamps and embossing powders! Explore ideas on adding lettering, words, and embellishments! You’ll leave with a smile on your face and a canvas that is uniquely your own! If you have a favorite quote or saying that you can use to enhance your work, please e-mail it to Char and she will have it ready for class. All materials will be provided. The material fee is $25.00 for MAL members; non-members pay $10 extra. The deadline to sign up is June 7.

July 5, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. “Printing” with Darcy Lanz-Sage
Learn to make “marks” on fabric using silkscreens and a variety of water-soluble media, along with fabric paints and inks! Participants will cut or rip a simple stencil to print, as well as use texture rubbings to create marks on fabric. By applying a binder to the fabric via a screen print screen, the marks will be made permanent. This workshop will provide the participants with many techniques to experiment with and expand their knowledge of surface designing. Materials to be brought by participant: a 9-inch wooden, embroidery hoop, 2 yards or more of muslin or Kona cotton or similar 100% cotton. Paper to print on is optional, but participants should bring masking tape, padded printing board if possible, textures for rubbings, any charcoal, pastels or water-soluble media (if you have them on hand), and T-pins. Materials supplied by presenter: screen printing screens, screen fabric, fabric paint, inks, binder or extender, water soluble crayons, pencils, create color aqua bricks, texture rubbing plates, pastels, padded printing boards, and paper. The material fee is $25.00 for MAL members; non-members pay $10 extra. The deadline for signing up is June 25.

Aug 2, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. “What Shall I Paint? - Concept & Content” with Barbara McFarland
The workshop will consist of discussions on various steps in beginning a painting from concept to composition, and design elements. Ideas for working in a series, a different color palette, and collage materials also will be discussed and demonstrated. Material List: Bring watercolor paper or canvas, water base paints, brushes, a water container, paper towels, plastic to cover a table, a small bottle of Elmer's Glue, a small plastic container or jar, any additional drawing materials, collage papers, & photos of favorite subjects. There is no fee for MAL members; non-members pay $10. The deadline for signing up is July 26. The limit is 15.

Sept 6, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. “Abstract Landscapes” with Frances Whitfield
A short lesson on a simplified, color wheel will fire students up. Students will then embark on a colorful journey creating a plentitude of vibrant, abstract landscapes. Material list: 1 roll of Viva (specifically Viva) paper towels, an old shirt (to protect your clothing), 6 ft. by 4 ft. 6mm plastic to cover table, a tablet of 140 lb. watercolor paper 11” x 16” minimum, and two 8” x 10” stretched canvases. Materials supplied by presenter: a ‘take-home” color wheel, papers, paint, gesso, and brushes. The material fee is $20.00 for MAL members; non-members pay $10 extra. The deadline for signing up is August 2. The workshop limit is 15 people.

Oct 4, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. “The Spirit of Paper” with Debbie Jircik
This process-oriented workshop will take you from fiber to paper, taking you through many steps in the process of creating a sheet of handmade paper. We’ll learn sheet forming, combined with technique and the spontaneity of the happy accident that will yield something beautiful! Expect to experiment, be inspired and to take something home with you. Material List: apron, wear old clothes and footwear that is waterproof as your feet might get wet! Optional bring pressed leaves or flowers to add as inclusions in the paper. All other materials will be provided by the presenter includes a paper making felt that students will take home. The material fee is $10.00 for MAL members; non-members pay $10 extra. The deadline for signing up is September 29. The workshop limit is 8.
